Issues known so far:
Need to reboot after installWe depend on Avahi for DMAP (DAAP, DPAP, Itunes), but the current version of Avahi requires DBus restart in order to work. We cannot restart DBus without rebooting the device. Also remember that the power cable must be UNPLUGGED before you reboot!
Crashes when network connection is lost while playing remote media
When playing remote audio or video in the background and your network is lost, you may experience crashes. We're working to fix this.
Tearing effect/defect
The Nokia N800 ships with a X11 server that doesn't report its Vertical Sync (VSync), thus applications that does animations (like Canola) cannot synchronize repaints with screen updates and you may get a weird result like this:
this affects the N800 only, but we are sure it will be fixed in the next Maemo release for it.
Random stops while moving through large folders
While moving through large folders, Canola stops scrolling without being told to do so. This is a bug with SDL or X11, still under investigation. Also only in the N800 version
Frequently Asked question
Q: Is Canola Free? Is it also Open Source?A: Yes and No. Canola is free, and will continue to be free but it's not YET open source. We have plans to release the source or at least a big part of it, which will allow users to create custom plugins.
Q: Why is the configuration tool Web-based? Wouldn't it be a lot better to have it inside Canola?
A: We also think so, but 2 problems appears: 1 - how to keep canola simple, with so many UI components needed? And worse: we would need twice the current number of people to make it, and unfortunately our team is very small.
Q: Why can't I select any item in the list, only the one under the "focus" area?
A: Canola was built thinking not only of the tablet but also for non-touchscreen possibilities. Thus it was made from scratch to work also with simple remote controls and etc. Placing selection in all items required a lot more user visual feedback to be usable, so we chose this simpler way. In our usability tests multiple selection activated got users lost or feeling uncomfortable browsing their media. If you wanna be able to do it, and know how to set Gconf strings, check back often for we'll soon place here the command to allow it.
Q: The device reboots when I try to load my pictures
A: There is a limitation in the device's memory, so you should always try to resize your pictures before sending them to the device. Huge images (bigger then 2500x1500px) will take lots of time and can freeze the device.
Q: Does Canola allow playlist creation?
A: No, and for now we don't support the default media player playlists either. :( You should create your own .pls or .m3u file(s) and place them on the memory card. Canola will parse it and put it on the database if it is correctly built. Paths must be complete in order for this to work.
