Carman is the ultimate open-source application that connects you to your car data and to your own way of moving with it, including map views, GPS features, trip recordings, information sharing with friends, gauge screens, speed alert and more. It's the private storage of where you go and how you go.
With a user friendly UI designed for Nokia Internet Tablets N800 and N810, its features are programmed to display how the car can communicate with you and how that can make your life easier. Originally designed for those who wish to understand more about the car mechanical behavior, Carman is also a guide to help you plan your journeys and keep track of your friends.
Our path
Carman's first version was developed in the OpenBossa Lab at INdT and released in 2007 targeting the hobbyist and the tuning addicted who could benefit from its gauges displays, trouble codes checks and data recording. The latest version takes that experience to a more customized level, matching you car data with the way you drive.
"The thing is, we are car lovers. And also developers. Or should it be the other way around? Anyway, Carman was born after those two obsessions. That's why we keep improving its features and that's why we want it to work better each time we turn on the car", says Eduardo Rocha, Carman's team leader.
It's not just about car obsession. Well, most of the times it is. But as cars are turning to be more refined machines and therefore complex ones, the need to understand their language, power and limits become crucial.
Carman's next rides
Developing Carman is like trying to get the best lap: you know you can make it better next ride. It is a non-stop and yet very daring process that is leading us to:
1) Improve the Follow Friend feature by integrating the pidgin usage into Carman UI.
2) Improve the OBD2 responsiveness and add new OBD Scan Tools to our supported list.
3) Extend the time limit for the trip record, which is now up to 10 hours.
4) Implement a brand new feature that will allow users to create their own custom POIs (Points of Interest) in the maps
